The Fisherman's Tackle Box Bible Frank's best-selling book on catching fish at the hot spots along the northern Gulf Coast can be ordered--autographed!--right here! In 274 pages he covers all the prime fishing areas in coastal Louisiana and Mississippi and includes plenty of tips from many of the recognized fishing experts. While mostly saltwater in nature, the book does have pertinent references to outstanding freshwater fishing. Every question the serious fisherman could ever ask is answered in this book: where to find 'em, what kind of tackle to use, how to rig the terminal ends, and the definitive breakdown on natural bait versus artificials. It's all in one volume that easily tucks away in your tackle box to take with you on the water and have at your fingertips for instant reference. But don't take our word for it. Read it all for yourself! Click the link above to learn more... Spillway Opening Will Affect Lake Pontchartrain! Carlton Dufrechau, president of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation likes to say, "The lake is back--even after Katrina!" But since the US Army Corps of Engineers opened the Bonnet Carre Spillway in early April, diverting millions of gallons of dirty Mississippi River water into the lake to alleviate the possibility of flooding New Orleans, it seems that nobody will be saying anything favorable about the lake anytime soon. At this writing, the Corps had opened 96 of the 350 bays of the spillway, but since the river is still rising and is presently just below the 17-foot flood stage, it wouldn't come as a surprise to anyone is all of the bays were eventually opened. Capt. Kenny Kreeger, my own personal fishing guide for the lake, told me just last week that the big spring run of trout had started. "Frank, I'm now catching about 12 to 15 trout a day running anywhere from 3 to 5 pounds. It's going to be a great trout season!" But then the spillway needles were pulled and the fresh river water came flushing through. Precisely how detrimental to the fisheries the opening will turn out to be will depend upon how long the spillway stays open (initial expectations are 4 to 6 weeks). I'll stay atop of it right here and keep you posted on the changes as they occur. But here's a salient point you must remember: in view of the recent spillway event if you want to catch lots of trout, reds, flounder, drum, and sheephead this spring and summer then Lake Pontchartrain isn't the place to do it. For that you need to go to Cocodrie or Lafitte or Golden Meadow or anyplace west of the Mississippi. If you need more information on fishing any place in Southeast Louisiana, feel free to call me at Channel 4 (504-529-6431) or e-mail me anytime at fdavis@wwltv.com. I'll talk with you about it one-on-one. Oh. . .and for all you boatless sportsmen who religiously fish from "The Frank Davis Fishing Pier" under the Seabrook Bridge on Lakeshore Drive in New Orleans. . .that, too, will feel the effects of the spillway. I'll keep you posted right here on this fishing spot, too. In the meantime, if you got specific questions, don't be reluctant to call or e-mail me. Lots of Info on the Web On-Line From Channel 4 !
